From Debe Haller regarding the Spell to Write and Read Seminar… When I began homeschooling over twenty years ago, I thought "i before e except after c and everything else is an exception to the rule" was the guideline for spelling. I struggled with teaching spelling until I attended Wanda Sanseri's Spell to Read and Write seminar which is based on the Spalding method. My own Scrabble game improved once I learned there where precise English spelling rules. It was the best investment of time and money in our home schooling adventure. Hope Country Schoolhouse will host this two day seminar, taught by Mary Tanksley, which will help you gain confidence in teaching reading, unlock the keys to literacy for your children, and empower them with a systematic and concise way to learn spelling. It will be held on two consecutive Saturdays in September. Non-Hope members are welcome to attend, so please respond quickly as our enrollment is limited to 18 participants. What follows below is a description of the caliber of what will be presented. Feel free to forward this e-mail flier to any of your friends who could benefit. In this unique "Back to School SWR Special", we will present SWR on two consecutive Saturdays, showing you, the teacher, how to use this program in your own home or classroom. After receiving your registration, we will send specific assignments for you to do in preparation for this seminar. Though not essential to attending the seminar, this will help in assimilating the material. There will be both things to read, as well as assignments to do with your children. After the first Saturday, you will receive lesson plans for that week. The following Saturday, we will complete the teacher training. What: Spell to Write and Read Seminar When: 2 Saturdays: Sept. 17 and 24, 2005, 9 AM- 5:30 PM Cost: $100 - includes all seminar hand-outs To register, send your name, address, fees and phone number to The core pack of materials is available at Hope Country Schoolhouse for $95. Spell to Write and Read, the overall teacher's manual to The Wise Guide for Spelling, is the culmination of thirty years of work by author Wanda Sanseri. Mrs. Sanseri is a Christian wife and mother with three home school graduates and has studied under Romalda Spalding (author of the Writing Road to Reading) and others. Spell to Write and Read is a Spalding based program that teaches the 70 basic phonograms and 29 spelling rules of the English language. With these simple tools you can explain 98% of the most commonly used English words. Contrary to the popular belief that the English language is riddled with exceptions and rule breakers you can now have a way to explain our language to your children so that they can understand and succeed. In this 16-hour SWR training, you will receive an overview of the program, its methodologies, and historical background. For the greater part of the course I will teach you (the mom/ teacher) as if you were the child learning from scratch. This experience with you being the student will help you to better understand SWR and give you the confidence to teach your own children with SWR should you choose to use this program. Mary Tanksley, certified teacher-trainer, has twenty-three years of home schooling experience. She says, "I have tried many different curricula and Spell to Write and Read is by far the best method I have found for teaching spelling, writing, and reading. I have seen students excel in spelling and reading, whether gifted, learning disabled, normal, or ESL. Some children have jumped three to four grade levels in one year!" Spell to Write and Read is an integrated approach as well as multi- sensory. We integrate all aspects of language arts. For example, we teach the sounds the letters make while teaching penmanship. SWR will cover penmanship, phonics, spelling, reading, beginning grammar, beginning composition, and vocabulary development all in one! Mary will cover when to introduce advanced grammar and composition, and give suggestions for that curriculum. It is multi- sensory as in the example above teaching the sounds simultaneous with penmanship. It uses all four senses simultaneously: seeing, hearing, saying, and writing. This successfully meets the needs of children with differing learning styles. Materials may be purchased prior to the seminar or on site. It is best, however, to have them prior to the seminar, so you can adequately prepare for it. Core sets (the 5 non-consumable teacher components) are available at Hope Country Schoolhouse or through contacting Mary Tanksley. For more information on the materials, see http://home.mindspring.com/~teachingkids/id1.html Contact Brock or Debe for store information at (714) 534-6733 or email Brock at info@hopecountryschoolhouse.com or, Debe at hope.ca@verizon.net or Mary at tanksley10@yahoo. After your child has reached college level spelling ability you can concentrate on expanding their vocabulary, work on advanced grammar, and other language arts skills. Think how exciting it would be for your child to be able to spell any word correctly that they can think or say! Spelling is such an important basis for becoming a good writer, yet reports show that the biggest deficiency of 90% of entering college freshman is spelling. This does not have to be! She explains the problems of whole-word instruction as well as the fact that many popular phonics programs teach faulty rules and principles that leave children with only a partial picture and more confusion. http://home.mindspring.com/~teachingkids/id27.html
